The Coatesville Area School District provides a Chromebook for each student. This is known in education as a ‘One to One’ (1:1) learning environment -- that is, one device for every one student. Our goal is for students to use technology to foster critical thinking skills, to support our curriculum, and improve problem solving, communication, and collaboration inside and outside of the classroom. The 1:1 program will also enable teachers and students to continue to create student-centered, personalized learning environments. Students will take greater control of their own learning and teachers will mentor them through this process.

Coatesville Area School District uses Canvas as our Learning Management System. Through Canvas, students can access their schedules, complete and turn in work, track their grades, communicate with teachers, and access resources. The District maintains a partnership with Project 10 million which will support families with at-home internet access.

Visit our website at CASD for more information.

Orchestra Teacher

Mr Andrew Meehan will join our staff as an Orchestra teacher this week. Some of you will recognize Mr. Meehan as he was your band and orchestra teachers at Rainbow Elementary. He has been in contact with the orchestra students and is providing them with practice material. I know that Mr. Meehan is ready for the challenge and he is even more excited to work with all of the students and to provide them with opportunities to improve their skills. Congratulations, Mr. Meehan.

Football Game Procedures

We are excited to see our Red Raider fans at our home football games, but want to remind our students and parents that students in grades 7 or younger must be accompanied by an adult chaperone at all times at our games, and must enter only through the home gate. Everyone is eager to get out and socialize after the year we’ve just been through, and we are happy to see our students of all ages. However, for safety reasons we must ask that adults stay with students in grades 7 or younger throughout the entire game. We ask that students and parents respect the rule that spectators remain in the bleachers throughout the game unless using the restroom or vising the concession stands. Please don’t stand along the fences in front of the bleachers. We also ask spectators to remain on the appropriate side of the field.

PSAT Testing Oct. 13th

The Coatesville Area School District is administering the PSAT test free of charge to all 8th through 11th grade students on Wednesday, October 13th. Results of the PSAT test for students in grade 11 (only) may qualify them for commendation through the National Merit Scholarship Program. Taking the PSAT is mandatory for all students in grades 8 through 11 unless an exemption is granted for religious reasons.

The PSAT test will be administered to 8th through 11th grade students on Wednesday morning, October 13th starting at 7:30 am. Students who are testing will attend their periods four through eight at the conclusion of the exam on an abbreviated schedule.

All 12th grade students will participate in a virtual learning day on Wednesday, October 13th. Teachers will post asynchronous assignments onto Canvas for the seniors to complete. This is a regular school day and all seniors are expected to log into Canvas for attendance purposes.

For PSAT test-takers after attendance is taken and preliminary testing procedures are completed, testing will immediately begin. The PSAT test will conclude at approximately 11:20 am. Students will be assigned to temporary testing rooms alphabetically where they will remain until dismissed via an announcement. Students in grades 10 and 11 who would normally attend TCHS and DCCC will be tested, and therefore will NOT attend TCHS or DCCC on October 13th.

The PSAT Student Guide Practice Manual is now available on our school website at www.casdschools.org/cash. Please take a few minutes to review this guide with your child and encourage him or her to take advantage of the practice opportunities in preparation for the upcoming exam. Additional practice tests can be found at PSAT Practice Tests. In addition to these practice tests, students can also link their College Board account to the Khan Academy for free, personalized PSAT/SAT prep that is targeted specifically to student need. We believe these tests will be helpful to the district in assessing student progress. In addition, conducting school-wide testing will remove any financial hardship presented by the need to pay for this test. If you have any questions about PSAT testing, please do not hesitate to contact the main office at 610-383-3730. Please see the reverse side of this letter for important testing procedures and information.

What to Bring

There are only a few things you really need to bring on test day, and a lot of things you will be better off leaving at home. Be sure to bring:

  • Face covering
  • Two No. 2 pencils with erasers
  • An approved calculator
  • Epinephrine auto-injectors (e.g., EpiPen’s) are permitted without the need for accommodations. They must be placed in a clear bag and stored under the student’s desk during testing. For policies on other medications and medical devices, contact Services for Students with Disabilities.

Nice to Have

  • A watch (without an audible alarm)
  • Extra batteries and backup equipment—you will have to ask for permission to access them. They cannot be on your desk during the test.
  • A bag or backpack
  • A drink or snacks (for your break)
  • Breakfast before you arrive.

What Not to Bring

  • Any devices, including digital watches, that can be used to record, transmit, receive, or play back audio, photographic, text, or video content (with the exception of CD players used for Language with Listening Subject Tests only)
  • Audio players/recorders, tablets, laptops, notebooks, Google Glass, or any other personal computing devices
  • iPods or other MP3 players
  • iPads or other tablet devices
  • Laptops, notebooks, PDAs, or any other personal computing devices
  • Any texting device
  • Cameras or any other photographic equipment
  • Separate timers of any type
  • Protractors, compasses, rulers
  • Highlighters, colored pens, colored pencils, mechanical pencils
  • Pamphlets or papers of any kind
  • Dictionaries or other books—there are no exceptions, even if English is not your first language.
  • Food or drinks (except for during breaks), unless approved by the College Board’s Services for Students with Disabilities. Learn more about testing with accommodations.

Your school counselor can share a complete list of prohibited devices—just ask to see the Official Student Guide.

Turn Off All Electronic Devices

You will need to turn off all electronic devices during the test, even during breaks. This includes cellphones. Be sure to turn off your watch alarm if you have one.

Why? Test centers are serious about security and quiet, so prohibited devices—which include cellphones, tablets, and MP3 players—must be turned off and put under your desk. Better yet: Leave them at home.

If You Bring or Use Prohibited Devices

The test administration staff is encouraged to collect and hold phones and other prohibited electronic devices during the test administration, including break periods, or to deny admission to anyone who is in possession of a prohibited electronic device.

If your device makes noise or you are seen using it at any time, including during breaks, you may be dismissed immediately, your scores can be canceled, and the device may be confiscated, and its contents inspected. The College Board is not responsible for loss or damage to personal items, including electronic devices, while you are in the test center.
